Watercolor & Embroidery: A Mixed Media Portrait of the Virgin Mary
This spiritually enriching mixed media art session invites you to engage in a contemplative, creative practice by painting the Virgin Mary in watercolor and adorning her with the tactile richness of hand stitching.
Rooted in both artistic expression and Marian devotion, this workshop offers a prayerful atmosphere in which participants will reflect on the beauty and symbolism of Our Lady while working with their hands.
The lesson begins with a step-by-step watercolor painting of the Virgin Mary focusing on her gentle countenance, traditional blue mantle, flowing robes and serene expression. Once the painting is complete and dry, participants will embellish key elements of the image with embroidery thread, such as the edges of her veil, golden stars, or radiant lines around her heart.
This layering of thread atop watercolor creates a striking, textural icon that becomes both art and prayer.
Class will be offered from 9AM-Noon at the Basilica on 5/10 and will be limited to the first 12 registrants. Another session will be offered in the Fall of 2025.
