Widows Group
An excerpt from St. Pope John Paul II
On the Dignity of Older People and their mission in the Church, …You are not, and must not consider yourself to be on the margins of the life of the Church, but active persons of a time in human existence which is rich in accumulated wisdom and spirituality. You still have a mission to fulfill and a contribution to make.
Older people should be encouraged to consecrate the years remaining hidden in the mind of God to a new mission illumined by the Holy Spirit.
Older people with the wisdom and experience which are the fruit of a life-time, have entered upon a time of extraordinary grace which opens to them new opportunities for prayer and union with God. Called to serve others and to offer their lives to the Lord and Giver of Life, new spiritual powers are given to them. For only older people, and thanks to them, shall the praises of the Lord be fully sung forever and ever! (Ps 7:13)
As a follow-up, in 1984, Pope JPII reinstated the Order of Widows: Again, being practice today is the consecration of widows, known since apostolic times…These women, through the vow of perpetual chastity as a sign of the Kingdom of God, consecrate their state of life in order to devote themselves to prayer and the service of the Church.
