Learn about the Saints: St Martin of Tours
The church celebrates the feast of St Martin on November 11.
St Martin of Tours was born in Hungary in the year 316. When he was young, his father was very proud of him because Martin wanted to be a Roman soldier when grew up. When he was only 15 years old, he was accepted into the army's best group, the Imperial Guard! Once he was trained, he would be a guard for the emperor! He would have the best weapons, the warmest clothes, and the finest armor!
But besides being a great soldier, Martin also believed in Jesus, and he wanted to be part of the church. One very cold night, as Martin was riding back to his barracks, hesaw a poor beggar near the gate to the city. He had no blanket or warm clothes, and was shivering because he was so cold. Martin stopped, and cut his own warm cloak in half, and gave the piece to the poor beggar.
That night, when Martin went to sleep wrapped up in the half of his cloak, he had a dream. He saw Jesus wrapped up in the other half of his cloak! The very next day Martin went off to be baptized. Not long after that, he left the army and became a monk. A monk is a man who lives his life serving God. Everyone who knew him said he was holy, and named him bishop of Tours.
St Martin is the patron saint of France
