A long time ago, God made some promises to his people, the Israelites. He gave them the Ten Commandments so that everyone would know what it was that they should do and not do so that they could live a good life, and be part of God’s family.
It is very important that we learn the Ten Commandments too, so that we can grow in love of God, and of our neighbors.
These are the Ten Commandments
Three that help you love God:
1. I am the Lord , your God. You shall not have strange gods before me. 2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 3. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s day
Seven help you love other people and yourself:
4. Honor your father and your mother 5. You shall not kill 6. You shall not commit adultery 7. You shall not steal 8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor 9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife 10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods
Jesus said that the greatest of these commandments is “You will love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” And then he said that we need to love our neighbors as ourself..
The first three commandments help us to love God, the other seven help us to love ourselves, and then to love others!
3. Connect Faith to Daily Life
Here are some ways that we show our love for God:
Put God first in your life
Only say God’s name with love and respect
Go to Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of obligation
Say your prayers every morning and night.
Here are some ways that we can show our love for others like we love ourselves:
Listen to our parents and those who take care of us, do as they say.
Be thankful for, and take care of those things that we have.
Always be fair in everything that we say and do.
Always tell the truth! Lying always hurts somebody.
Never take anything that is not ours.
Always treat others with respect, because God created them, like he created you, for a purpose! Everyone is special and should be loved.
Share with your parents how you can share God’s love with someone and try to do it today.
Draw a picture of you doing something nice for someone.
4. Learn Catholic Prayers
.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us, And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil . Amen
5. Learn About the Saints
SAINT PATRICK On March 17, the church remembers and celebrates St Patrick. He is best known for bringing the faith to the people of Ireland, but also for using the shamrock, a three-leaf clover, to help explain the mystery of the Blessed Trinity. Patrick was born in Britain, but one day when he was taking care of his father’s sheep, he was taken away by pirates. The pirates brought him to Ireland, where he was forced to do work for other people. He was there for 6 years, until he was able to escape and go back home to his parents. But even though he was back home, he remembered the people in Ireland, and how they did not know God.
Patrick loved God, and studied to become a priest, and then he even became a bishop! Once a bishop, he went back to Ireland, and started to teach the people who had been so bad to him. St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland.
St Patrick, pray for us, and especially pray for all who do not know God yet!
