This Sunday’s Gospel invites us to repentance and reminds us of God’s mercy and patience. In the parable of the fig tree, the tree represents each of us, the gardener is Jesus, and the owner is God the Father. God seeks fruit in our lives, and Jesus pleads for more time to help us grow. But there is also a warning: we must eventually bear fruit.
To bear fruit means to live lives of repentance and show the fruits of the Spirit-love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal 5:22). Lent is a time to turn back to God, confess our sins, and actively live out our faith through good works.
Let ask: Do we seek forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation? Do We live lives of charity? Are we open to being cultivated but God’s grace so we cab bear good fruit?
